Year 4 The Compost Crew

Year Four's composting mission is in full swing as they continue to help our O.L.D. school community to turn organic lunchbox scraps into nutrients for soil. The important business of turning our school’s collective food scraps into nutrients for soil has helped us to become a more sustainable school community by reducing the amount of organic waste sent to landfill. It has also helped us to improve the soil quality, growth and production of our school’s community garden. Overall, Year Four students have developed a growing awareness and understanding of the importance of composting and how valuable foods scraps.

Meet the Compost Crew

Organic wastes, such as food waste and yard waste, make up 25 to 50% of what people throw away! While you may not be able to compost all of the organic waste you generate, composting can significantly cut down on your overall trash. When we throw away yard and food waste, it decomposes in a landfill and releases methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas. While most landfills have technology to capture much of this methane, eliminating the gas at its source is even better.
